The Wrath & The Dawn

Goodreads synopsis –

In a land ruled by a murderous boy-king, each dawn brings heartache to a new family. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, is a monster. Each night he takes a new bride only to have a silk cord wrapped around her throat come morning. When sixteen-year-old Shahrzad’s dearest friend falls victim to Khalid, Shahrzad vows vengeance and volunteers to be his next bride. Shahrzad is determined not only to stay alive, but to end the caliph’s reign of terror once and for all.

Night after night, Shahrzad beguiles Khalid, weaving stories that enchant, ensuring her survival, though she knows each dawn could be her last. But something she never expected begins to happen: Khalid is nothing like what she’d imagined him to be. This monster is a boy with a tormented heart. Incredibly, Shahrzad finds herself falling in love. How is this possible? It’s an unforgivable betrayal. Still, Shahrzad has come to understand all is not as it seems in this palace of marble and stone. She resolves to uncover whatever secrets lurk and, despite her love, be ready to take Khalid’s life as retribution for the many lives he’s stolen. Can their love survive this world of stories and secrets?

Goodreads rating – 4,23/5 stars

My review – SPOILER ALERT!!!

As you may know this is a retelling of the Arabian Nights. This was nothing like I expected because even though I knew it would be great, it was betters ham expected! The ending left me confused and in desperate need of the second book! I have so many questions that need answering, and I need more cuteness and excitement. If you love action packed books with secrets and betrayal and awesomeness then just read it already!

If you hate love triangles but love sarcastic charming guys that will do anything to protect their princesses then you will love this book. Tariq was kind of a pain and I didn’t really like him, so In my mind their was no love triangle at all, though some may say otherwise. King of Kings, Khaled on the other hand… Is perfection!

The protagonist – Shahrzad was a great character as she stands up for what she believes in and protects the people she loves. She reminds me of Celaena  Sardothien from the Throne of glass series, as she has awesome fighting skills and is not afraid to stand up for herself. Her weird friendship with Despina (the handmaiden) was a highlight of the book as their arguements were simply hilarious. Despina referred to Shahrzad as “brat calipha”which always set me off into a fit of giggles.

As I mentioned before so much happened in this book and I can’t wait to get the second one! I have so many questions, because of the cliff hangers at the end which were just not very nice! If you haven’t already, please go and get this book because it is really good! We can all impatiently wait for The Rose and The Dagger together!

Roses were a big part of this book as they seemed to appear many times, as did a dagger which is connected in some way to Shahrzad’s father. It all seems so confusing but also extremely intriguing. Can’t wait to find out what role her father plays in all of this and where Shahrzad’s heart will lead her! What will happen to Tariq, Khaled and Jalal?

My rating – 4,5/5 stars
