REVIEW

I didn’t like the Grisha Trilogy at all but everyone told me that the Six of Crows duology was completely different and a lot better. I trusted the recommendations and headed into this book with relatively high expectations. I was not disappointed! Six of Crows was interesting from page 1 till the very end!

The biggest flaw (in my opinion) when it came to the trilogy was the lack of character development. Everyone was annoying (except Nikolai) and it made me not care about the plot or what was going to happen to the characters. When It came to Six of Crows, I loved every single character and simply could not stop reading when one of them was in danger.

I adore Kaz! He is so mysterious and tough. I love how he is so powerful, yet he is also so young. He has lived a life of hardship and struggles to care for people yet he protects his crew. He is just and fair when it comes to them. Inej was awesome! She’s so badass and kind. She was hurt in her past which made her strong and I loved the fact that she knows what she wants. There is no insta-love in the book or love triangles! It was refreshing!

I loved the chemistry between Nina and Matthias! They both amazing characters and really clicked well. There back story was so interesting and it was great to see how their relationship evolved through the book.Wylan and Jesper were both great characters! They were really funny and added a bit of lightheartedness to the group. I can’t wait to see their relationship blossom in the next book!

Overall I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read Crooked Kingdom!

Vengeful by V E Schwab

SYNOPSIS

The sequel to VICIOUS, V.E. Schwab’s first adult novel.

Sydney once had Serena—beloved sister, betrayed enemy, powerful ally. But now she is alone, except for her thrice-dead dog, Dol, and then there’s Victor, who thinks Sydney doesn’t know about his most recent act of vengeance.

Victor himself is under the radar these days—being buried and re-animated can strike concern even if one has superhuman powers. But despite his own worries, his anger remains. And Eli Ever still has yet to pay for the evil he has done.

REVIEW

The relationship between Sydney, Victor and Mitch will forever be the highlight of this series for me! They are 3 random people thrown together but they really care about one another and it’s so cute!

Marcella was an interesting character! She was sassy and bold but I felt like she was really set on becoming powerful yet didn’t quite achieve it. She spoke a lot about what she wanted to do but none of it came about! I felt like Vengeful didn’t have to be as long winded as it was but I still really enjoyed it!

I love the development of Eon throughly this book and thought is was brilliant! Eli and Victor are both great character and I hope V E Schwab releases another book with these characters because I have a lot of unanswered questions!

4/5 stars!

Siege and Storm – Leigh Bardugo

SYNOPSIS

Darkness never dies.

Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land, all while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. But she can’t outrun her past or her destiny for long.

The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world. With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka. But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling’s game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her—or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm.

REVIEW

Siege and Storm was a breathe of fresh air after Shadow and Bone! Still wasn’t a huge fan of it though!

Alina actually goes through character development and is a lot less annoying. She really matured and grows into a strong character through this book. Throughout the first part of Siege and Storm Alina seems to rely on everyone to save her but in the second half she controls her own power and takes control of her situation. She makes some good friends and we encounter so many new great characters! Nikolai is amazing and I love him.

The Grisha world makes more sense to me now and the first book had very limited world building as we just had loads of terms thrown at us with little explanation. I love the world and find it fascinating! I love how a lot of the words stem from Russian so some key terms are used as foreshadowing!

Mal is so annoying though! He seems to have a power complex. He’s jealous of everyone and constantly on edge but then also very cute and caring about Alina. .

Overall I’m not a fan of this series though! It’s 3/5 stars for me!

Turtles All The Way Down – John Green

SYNOPSIS

It all begins with a fugitive billionaire and the promise of a cash reward. Turtles All the Way Down is about lifelong friendship, the intimacy of an unexpected reunion, Star Wars fan fiction, and tuatara. But at its heart is Aza Holmes, a young woman navigating daily existence within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.

In his long-awaited return, John Green shares Aza’s story with shattering, unflinching clarity.

REVIEW

This book is so hyped up which is perhaps one of the reasons that I feel so let down by it.

I will start by saying that I loved the way mental illness is portrayed and Aza character is great! She goes through her ups and downs. Her character is so frustrating but it makes those that have been through mental illness relate to her and those that have had friends with mental illness understand how frustrating it can be when you don’t understand why someone behaves a certain way.

Unfortunately that is the only good thing about this book. The plot line was so boring and made very little sense to me. Some of the character were not developed at all and they just seemed like they were just there for the sake of it. I did not understand the point of Daisy and Mychal’s relationship or the instalove between Davis and Aza. The crime aspect of the novel really intrigued me as did Noah’s character but in the end the revelations were boring.

I really wanted to like this book and I felt like it had so much potential but it just didn’t work for me. I love John Green’s writing but the plot of this book was such a let down!

Vicious – V E Schwab

SYNOPSIS

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

REVIEW

OMG I LOVED VICIOUS! 🖤

Eli makes me want to commit murder! I cannot stand him and I found Serena really annoying. She doesn’t redeem herself in my opinion in the end although some many argue differently.

The relationship between Victor and Sydney is adorable! I loved Victor and thought that he was an awesome character. He may do some bad things but he’s a good guy at heart.

Mitch and his chocolate milk just made me laugh. I love the idea of having someone who is described as big and intimidating but is actually really sweet. I love how V E Schwab portrays the fact that we shouldn’t judge people by their appearance because it’s such an important lesson to learn for everyday life!

Overall I thought this was brilliant and I can’t wait to finish Vengeful!

A Torch Against The Night – Sabaa Tahir

SYNOPSIS

Elias and Laia are running for their lives. After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.

Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.

But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.

Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape…and kill them both.

REVIEW

BETTER THAN THE FIRST BOOK!

I enjoyed reading An Ember in the Ashes but I wasn’t completely blown away by it and I didn’t crave the sequel. That being said… this book blew my mind! It was so fast paced as it start off exactly where An Ember in the Ashes ends. Laia and Elias are on the run and they are headed North to free Laia’s brother!

Throughout this we meet so many new amazing characters! We learn more about characters from the previous book! There are some horrific deaths throughout this book that really rattled me. The so called ‘villains’ throughout this book were not as extreme as the in the previous book, however Marcus is quite a horrific emperor (not a spoiler… it was too be expected).

If you are like me and you hate love triangles, you will love this book. I felt like the romance between Laia, Keenan and Elias was really annoying but it’s barely mentioned in these books (and there is a massive shocking plot twist) because the focus is on survival.

I loved learning more about Helene Aquilla – Blood Shrike. From coming across as very cold hearted to now being someone who loves her family, friends and the Empire. She is such a brave badass female character!

I love the supernatural element of this series and I hope to find out more about it in the next book! I want to know more about Laia, Elias, Cook and Helene Aquilla.

Eliza and her Monsters – Francesca Zappia’s

SYNOPSIS

Her story is a phenomenon. Her life is a disaster.

In the real world, Eliza Mirk is shy, weird, and friendless. Online, she’s LadyConstellation, the anonymous creator of the wildly popular webcomic Monstrous Sea. Eliza can’t imagine enjoying the real world as much as she loves the online one, and she has no desire to try.

Then Wallace Warland, Monstrous Sea’s biggest fanfiction writer, transfers to her school. Wallace thinks Eliza is just another fan, and as he draws her out of her shell, she begins to wonder if a life offline might be worthwhile.

But when Eliza’s secret is accidentally shared with the world, everything she’s built—her story, her relationship with Wallace, and even her sanity—begins to fall apart.

REVIEW

I fell in with love Francesca Zappia’s writing when I read ‘Made you up’ so when I saw ‘Eliza and her monsters’ it was immediately added to my TBR.

I will say straight away that I made a mistake by listening to this as an audiobook as opposed to reading it as a physical book. The book has a lot of drawings and online text with usernames so as an audiobook it can get confusing.

Moving onto the actual plot itself… wow! It’s a powerful and very realistic book. Eliza is a very cool character and I would love to have her as a friend. If I read this a few years ago I would have been able to fully relate to Eliza because I was nerdy and also fought with my family and those around me who thought I was just lazy as opposed to realising there was more going on.

The writing is beautiful and I really enjoyed the plot. In a world where everyone has different personas online nowadays, I think that this book is so relevant and interesting! I’m glad that it portrayed ‘online friendships’ as being realistic whilst also pouting out the life is great in the physical world too. The family relationships that go up and down are stereotypical of a household with teenagers. Sensitive subjects are discussed with the right amount of information that allows readers to understand what is going on but without glorifying mental illness. There is an element of romance within this novel however it isn’t discussed in great detail which I enjoyed as I didn’t think it was important.

Overall an amazing book that I would highly recommend!

An Ember in the Ashes – Sabaa Tahir

SYNOPSIS

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

REVIEW

This book sat on my TBR shelf for ages and for some reason I kept putting it off. I’m so glad I’ve finally read it because I truly enjoyed it and cannot wait to read the next book in the series!

I love the characters and the plot itself. The only thing that I did find a little irritating was the odd love triangles going on. One of them was understandable, but the other made no sense to me. It seemed awkward and forced.

The novel starts off straight by jumping into a really extreme and scary scenario which sets the pace of the book and the descriptions were great. The world building could have been a bit better but overall it was unique and interesting. I hope that throughout the series the authors goes into some of the characters backstories as it would be interesting to understand how certain characters became how they are in the book.

Insanity – Cameron Jace

SYNOPSIS

After accidentally killing everyone in her class, Alice Wonder is now a patient in the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum. No one doubts her insanity. Only a hookah-smoking professor believes otherwise; that he can prove her sanity by decoding Lewis Carroll’s paintings, photographs, and find Wonderland’s real whereabouts. Professor Caterpillar persuades the asylum that Alice can save lives and catch the wonderland monsters now reincarnated in modern day criminals. In order to do so, Alice leads a double life: an Oxford university student by day, a mad girl in an asylum by night. The line between sanity and insanity thins when she meets Jack Diamond, an arrogant college student who believes that nonsense is an actual science.

REVIEW

Insanity by Cameron Jace is both an amazing book and also a confusing one. On one hand I thought that the plot was incredibly interesting and well crafted but on the other hand the characters confused me and seemed to be random.

The relationship between the Pillar and Alice was great and very comical. The history behind the Cheshire was great and I really enjoyed the twists in the book.

I can’t seem to understand Jack Diamonds role in this book. He honestly seemed like a really random character and completely useless. Perhaps he is spoken about more in the later book, but I don’t think I’ll be reading them to find out.

Alice’s backstory is still unclear which is interesting and I loved how all the Wonderland characters were human characters that reflected their true selves.

Overall I would give this book 3,5 stars!
